Chris Haughton (2014), Walker Books Ltd

Amidst a forest of blue, a bright red bird is spotted in the distance. Four characters are marching into the woods with a plan. Shh! the taller three figures say to the smallest one when he dares to speak outload: “hello, birdie.” “Shh! We have a plan,” they say. The four continue to tiptoe slowly toward the bird, nets in hand ready to capture their prey. After several fumbled attempts and more “shh-ing” to the little one who keeps trying to make friends with the bird, the group is suddenly surrounded by a flock of brightly colored birds, all thanks to the kindness shown by the little one.

Talk with a child about this book

How do you think the little one felt after constantly being told to, “Shh!”?

What happened toward the end of this book?

After all the planning and tip-toeing around, why do you think the birds suddenly flocked around the group? Was it because of the plan? Why or why not?

I love the way the little one feels free to be who they are and approach the bird with kindness despite the pressure from the bigger ones to act in a different way, a mean way; and that the kindness of the little one is rewarded in the end by attracting the flock of birds.
